NBA Implements New Rest Rules with Exceptions for Eligible Players

The NBA’s new, more restrictive rules for unexcused rest provide exceptions for players who meet certain criteria at the start of the season.
Players aged 35 or older on the opening day of the season, those with more than 34,000 career minutes of play or more than 1,000 games played may request rest.
Each request will be examined by the competition and may be refused if the league considers that the reasons given by the franchise and the player are not valid.

The NBA will allow pre-approved waivers for back-to-back games, better known as back-to-backs, for players who are 35 years old on opening day or who have accumulated a 34,000-minute workload in the regular season or 1,000 games between the regular season and the playoffs, revealed ESPN and The Athletic after consulting the competition plans.

If a team believes that a star player cannot play in consecutive games, it must provide the NBA, at least one week in advance, with written information explaining why the player’s participation should be limited.

Star players who fall into this category are Chris Paul, Mike Conley, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, DeMar DeRozan and James Harden. We review all players who could potentially be excused if they meet the league’s requirements, although this rule only applies to players who have been members of the All-Star and All-NBA teams over the last three seasons.

It should be noted that not all of these players would be affected by the new rules, which only apply to players who have been All Star or All NBA in the last three seasons. If one of them showed up for All Star 2024, they would enter the category and could therefore claim their age, minutes or matches played in the competition.
