Former world champion Philipp Lahm has great expectations of the new national coach Julian Nagelsmann. One point makes him skeptical. His ex-teammate sees Nagelsmann’s Bayern past as a plus point.

Former soccer world champion Philipp Lahm is skeptical about the decision to appoint Julian Nagelsmann as the new national coach due to his relatively limited experience.

“We’ll see how he deals with it,” the 39-year-old told “Bild am Sonntag” with a view to the big challenges facing the national team. Nagelsmann now has to find the core of the team as quickly as possible. “I can’t say whether he can do that: he’s relatively young and doesn’t have that experience yet. I’m excited.”

The 36-year-old former Bayern coach Nagelsmann was introduced as national coach on Friday and signed a contract until after the home European Championships in 2024. From Lahm’s point of view, it is now crucial that Nagelsmann quickly defines and develops a style of play with the national team. “In recent years we have lost our idea of ​​how we want to play. We had an identity, but that is gone. It is completely different in England or Spain,” said the tournament director of the Euro 2024.

Lahm’s world champion colleague Per Mertesacker believes Nagelsmann can create euphoria in Germany by next year’s tournament. “It somehow feels right. It’s nice to see that he creates a certain atmosphere of optimism,” said the 38-year-old on ZDF’s “Aktuelle Sportstudio”.

He doesn’t see the fact that Nagelsmann knows numerous national players from his time at FC Bayern as a problem. “I don’t think so. He needs a strong Bayern block, he knows that. The connection to these players will help him incredibly,” said Mertesacker. Bayern, with then Munich coach Nagelsmann, parted ways with his goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovic at the beginning of the year, much to Neuer’s disappointment. Since then, the relationship between Neuer and Nagelsmann has been considered strained.
