Nasser Al Khelaïfi Re-elected President of ECA and Addresses Super League Situation

Nasser Al Khelaïfi was re-elected president of the ECA (European Club Association) during the General Assembly held in Berlin and later appeared before the media to address all kinds of questions, including those referring to the exile of his organization from Madrid, Barça and Juventus since the outbreak of the Super League. “I call it the ‘No Superliga’. Nobody wants to do it. We don’t care what they do. They are outside. Before there were three teams, now there are two… ”, he said in a clear allusion to madridistas and culés.

Al Khelaïfi also spoke publicly for the first time about the rise of Saudi Arabian football and whether it could pose a threat to the European football habitat. “I don’t think there is danger. We focus on Europe and our clubs. We have the best and most important competitions, the best players. It is not for me to judge what happens outside of Europe. We focus on ourselves,” he commented.

Already the day before, during his speech before the assembly, Al Khelaïfi had remembered the Super League: “I will never forget all the departures from the WhatsApp group of the ECA Board on Sunday, April 18, 2021. In fact, I thought that my phone had been hacked, and it wouldn’t be the first time. However, I will always remember how we stood strong as an institution and the clubs that returned, some of which are contributing more than ever to the ECA,” he confessed.
