DFB officially presents Nagelsmann as the new national coach

Julian Nagelsmann is officially announced as the new national coach at a DFB press conference. The 36-year-old succeeds Hansi Flick, who was fired due to continued lack of success.

When Julian Nagelsmann was appointed as the new national coach, Sandro Wagner had to rethink his approach. Nagelsmann really wanted to have him as an assistant coach. The problem: Wagner was under contract with ZDF as an expert. But Nagelsmann did some convincing.

After moving to the team of the new national coach Julian Nagelsmann, Sandro Wagner is ending his work as a TV expert at ZDF. The broadcaster announced this on Friday after it became known that the 35-year-old would be Nagelsmann’s new assistant. “With his footballing expertise and pointed love of formulation, Sandro Wagner has recently been an excellent addition to our team of experts. He will now not be available to us as an expert for the home European Championships,” said ZDF sports director Yorck Polus.

Wagner was recently a permanent member of the ZDF team of experts and also worked as a co-commentator for the station. He was already in action for ZDF at the 2021 European Championships and the 2022 World Cup. Originally he was also supposed to accompany the home European Championships in 2024 for the broadcaster.

“ZDF gave me the opportunity to start as a TV expert in 2020,” said Wagner. “Being able to accompany the European Championships in your own country as a ZDF expert would of course have been very appealing. But now I’m extremely looking forward to my new job as assistant coach of the German national team, which will be my full focus from now on.” The two would not have been reconcilable, conflicts of interest were inevitable. It’s hard to imagine ZDF expert Wagner publicly criticizing FC Bayern players, who then have to take assistant coach Wagner into their confidence during breaks for international matches.

Wagner, together with Benjamin Glück, forms Nagelsmann’s assistants. The 37-year-old Glück has already worked at TSG Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig and most recently at FC Bayern as an assistant coach in Nagelsmann’s team.

Wagner is already on the road for Nagelsmann this week

The eight-time national player Wagner ended his active career in 2020 after stints at, among others, FC Bayern and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, where Nagelsmann was his coach. He then started his coaching career and most recently led SpVgg Unterhaching to promotion to the 3rd league. In the summer he initially moved to the DFB as assistant coach to Hannes Wolf at the U20. After separating from Hansi Flick, Wagner and Wolf recently looked after the national team on an interim basis together with sports director Rudi Völler

Nagelsmann said about Wagner this Friday when he was introduced as national coach: “Sandro did a very good job in Unterhaching. It made perfect sense for me to ask him. Sandro immediately signaled that he wanted to do that. I am very, very happy. It’s already traveling to stadiums this week.” Nagelsmann reported on the conversation with Wagner when he wanted to win him over for the job: “It was typical of Sandro: the phone got very warm on my ear because it was burning a lot. “
