Misaki Doi played her last match on the tour on Thursday
Misaki Doi’s career is over! The 32-year-old played her last match on the tour at the WTA 500 tournament in Tokyo on Thursday and said goodbye to active tennis for good in front of her home audience. At the end of her career, Doi lost to Maria Sakkari 3:6 and 1:6.

“It was an honor to play against Misaki in her last professional match. You deserve to enjoy life, enjoy yourself and have fun. We know how hard tennis life is. So take some time, and I “I’m sure you’ll find a way to find something special in your life again. You’ve had a wonderful career, so congratulations,” Sakkari said in the on-court interview.
Doi won her only singles title on the tour in Luxembourg in 2015 and reached her career high of No. 30 a year later. German tennis fans will remember the Japanese primarily because of the Australian Open 2016: Back then, Doi missed a match point against Angelique Kerber in the first round, and two weeks later the Bremen native won her first Grand Slam title in Melbourne.
