Mikson’s “hat-trick” helps Latvia win the UEFA Nations League

On Tuesday, the Latvian women’s football team beat Andorra 4:0 (4:0) in the second match of the Nations League of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) away from home and achieved their first success, in which Karlīna Mikson scored three goals.

In the 15th minute of the match, Miksone successfully used the opponent’s mistake, who intercepted the pass and beat the Andorra goalkeeper from a comfortable position, putting the Latvian footballers in the lead.

A little more than ten minutes later, Latvia doubled the lead. Olga Ševtsova passed to Mixone in front of Andorra’s goal, and the author of the first goal helped the ball into the opponent’s goal with one touch.

Ten minutes before the end of the first regular time, the score became 3-0 in favor of Latvia after Viktorija Zaičikova stood out in the counterattack with a strong shot in the bottom corner of the goal.

During the compensation of the first half, Mixon once again beat the opponent’s goalkeeper and got a hat-trick.

In the second half, Latvian footballers continued to attack Andorra’s goal, but the result remained unchanged, and the game ended with 4:0 in favor of Latvia.

On Friday, in the first match of Group C, the Latvians missed several opportunities and lost to Malta with the result 0:1, who scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute. Andoriettes visited Moldova and won 2:1.

The teams will play a two-round tournament until December, after which the winner of the group will get the right to play in the B League in the qualifying stage of the European Championship, while the three best runners-up will participate in the “play-off” games in the fight for such an opportunity.

This selection cycle marks a new procedure for the qualification of the European Championships. The changes in the play-off system have been developed with the aim of increasing the proportion of sportingly significant games, giving teams the opportunity to compete with opponents of their own level, and to strive for games with stronger opponents. At the same time, all participants are given the opportunity to qualify for the final tournament.

The list of candidates includes footballers from five domestic clubs, as well as teams in Iceland, Slovenia, Poland, Italy and Sweden.

In preparation for the Nations League games, Latvian football players twice played 1:1 with Azerbaijan in test matches in July.

The head coach of the national team is Roman Kvačovs, who is assisted by Edgars Klibus, Anna Poniatovska and Marks Bogdanov.
