Today has been marked in the United States since 2001. 22 years ago, one of the greatest tragedies occurred in the country after the attack against the Twin Towers in New York, which, according to official figures, left a total of 2,977 victims. They died after the attack.

That day a story was being prepared that would headline the newspapers in the United States, but in the end it had to be postponed. Michael Jordan, who had retired for the second time in January 1999, was going to announce his return to the court.

Jordan decided to wait. He knew it was not the time to make such an announcement. The United States was experiencing dark days in the country and had suffered one of the worst attacks in its history. It had to be two weeks later when the former Chicago Bulls player made the announcement.

“While I am excited about my imminent return to the court, I am deeply saddened by recent tragic events and my heart goes out to the victims and their families,” Jordan said in his statement. “Out of deep respect for them, I will not participate in media interviews before the start of training camp.”

Jordan’s great gesture

Jordan decided to sign a contract with the Washington Wizards to later put an end to his long career in the most important basketball league in the world. He decided to donate his salary of $1 million dollars to the families of the victims of the attack.

The story didn’t end there. Jordan’s return to the NBA would take place in the city where the events occurred. Madison Square Garden was the stage where the legend donned the colors of his new team, a month and a half later but still with the memory of that tragedy.
