Mathys Tel Making an Impact at FC Bayern: Impressive Substitution Performances and Promising Future

Once again he almost became the decisive man at FC Bayern. Mathys Tel caused quite a stir after coming on as a substitute against Bayer Leverkusen and prepared Leon Goretzka’s 2-1 in an exemplary manner. Only the penalty awarded against Munich in stoppage time, which caused a lot of discussion, prevented success in the top game.

Of course, that didn’t diminish the impact that Tel’s substitution once again had. Thomas Tuchel had already shown a golden touch on matchday 3 when he brought the 18-year-old on in the final phase of the game at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Frenchman thanked him and headed the 2-1 winning goal from a corner.

Tel is one of the winners at the start of the season. If he was noticed in the 3-0 defeat in the Supercup against RB Leipzig, in which he was in the starting line-up, because of his poor conversion of chances, he had to be content with the joker role in the first four match days due to the arrival of Harry Kane. But he delivered. Two goals and one assist in just 54 Bundesliga minutes are an outstanding figure.

Playfulness, dynamism, the courage for one-on-one duels: Tel showed several things in the first games that Tuchel wants to see from his offensive players – and that Serge Gnabry, for example, has not shown so often before.

Will the starting eleven soon be rewarded? At the press conference before the Champions League duel against Manchester United on Wednesday evening, Tuchel praised his youngster – but also emphasized his importance as a substitute. “He has a lot of influence from the bench – that’s really a weapon at the moment. We know we can play games with him. We know what he can give us from the bench,” said the 50-year-old when asked by SPORT1.

Tuchel emphasized: “I am very happy that he is here. He’s very happy to be here.”

A start against Manchester United seems unlikely. Although Tuchel didn’t let his guard down, he confirmed that Tel is a candidate for the starting eleven in the future: “He will also start games for us this season. I find it impressive how he put away the missed chances to score against Leipzig. Now he shows that he can score and prepare goals for us. He’s on the right track.”

New signing Harry Kane also praised his teammate when asked by SPORT1: “He started really well. He’s always at full speed in training and whenever he came in, he made a difference.” A dual leadership of Kane Tel would certainly be a possible scenario in the future, alternatively the fast French youngster could also occupy one of the wing positions.

But Tel doesn’t just impress on the pitch: the 18-year-old already fully identifies with the club, even though he only came to Munich from Stade Renn a year ago.

In general, he is now perceived differently by his teammates. “The looks have changed. My teammates often come to me and give me advice. We have developed a relationship in which I feel her trust.”

If Tel continues like this, a place in the starting eleven will only be a matter of time.
