Martino said that “it was not prudent” for Messi to play against Houston | The coach’s explanation for the star’s absence in the US Open Cup final

Rosario Gerardo “Tata” Martino, coach of Inter Miami, admitted that “it was not prudent” for star Lionel Messi to play in the final of the US Open Cup that his team lost to Houston Dynamo by 2 to 1.

“It was not wise for me to play this game, that’s clear. I wasn’t even there to consider it for a few minutes because we were taking risks,” the Argentine coach remarked after the game. Furthermore, Tata announced that Messi’s presence in the next matches will depend on the doctors’ opinion.

“Leo will surely play before the League ends, but we will go game by game defining the situation when the medical department informs us that he is fit to do so,” Martino explained.

Messi watched his team’s final from the audience because of his persistent pain in his right hamstring and the injury opens up many unknowns about his participation in the next FIFA South American Qualifying window.

Argentina, led by Lionel Scaloni, will face Paraguay on Thursday, October 12 at 8 p.m. at the Monumental Stadium in River Plate and on October 17 they will visit Peru in Lima.
