Mark Hughes: From Street Basketball Player to Rising Star in the Hamburg Towers

We all know street footballers. As a child, every free moment you had, you would play football outside with your friends. The garage as a gate, the pill a bit dull. They are technically brilliant and love the game. The Hamburg Towers are relying on a real street basketball player in the Easy Credit BBL this season: Mark Hughes (26/USA).

As a child in Youngstown, Ohio, the sniper gambled every day on his doorstep. “We had a basket right on the street,” says the 1.93 meter man and laughs. “When we played, the cars had to stop and wait. We were known for this in the neighborhood. The guys who stop traffic.”

At the age of five, Hughes picked up the orange ball for the first time at the YMCA youth organization. He later also tried track and football, but from the age of 15 he dedicated himself to shooting hoops: “I injured myself too often and it started to affect my basketball. And it was obviously the right decision.”

After three years in the second Spanish league, former tower Jaylon Brown’s (29) friend moved from Estudiantes Madrid to the Elbe. “I’m never satisfied and always want to achieve more,” says three-point specialist Hughes. “My goal is to establish myself in the BBL and the EuroCup and make a name for myself here. “I want to get better every day.”

He receives support from the entire family. And that means: Hughes has HUGE support…

“I have a big, big family,” grins Hughes. “Four brothers.” He takes a meaningful pause. “And four sisters. Growing up in such a crazy household was very special. There was always something going on, never boring. Someone was always yelling or crying. But I love all of it. My parents did a great job raising us. Especially my mother. She is a saint. I have no idea how she did it.”

Hughes is the third youngest of the nine siblings – and also gets number 3 at the Towers. “I had her at the YMCA as a little boy. Starting with a new number now would be too late after all these years.”

At the start of preparation, Hughes suffered a minor injury to his groin. The fan of NBA club Cleveland Cavaliers was the top scorer in two of three test games. After six weeks of training, he is now eager for the Towers’ first competitive game on September 24th in the cup against second division Dresden. “I’m super excited and can’t wait. It’s going to be a great season. I expect a lot – from myself and the team.”
