Mario Götze’s Dip in Form and the Pressure of the Upcoming European Championship at Home

Mario Götze has not yet been able to put his stamp on Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt’s game this season. Does the dip in form possibly have something to do with the upcoming European Championship at home?

Mario Götze failed to contribute directly to the goal in Eintracht Frankfurt’s first five Bundesliga games. The draw kings of the league – the SGE’s last four games ended without a winner – are already one of the weakest offensives with four meager goals.

Götze, as a fixed point in the attacking midfield, is therefore coming more and more into focus. His lack of form is causing problems for Eintracht Frankfurt.

In the most recent 0-0 draw against SC Freiburg, the 31-year-old was only substituted on after an hour. Head coach Dino Toppmöller justified the decision by saying that the offensive player had to be substituted at half-time in the UEFA Conference League against Aberdeen (2-1) “due to a hit”. Although he “gave the green light” during the final training session on Saturday, he ultimately lacked the necessary “freshness,” said the SGE coach.

Is Götze putting himself under too much pressure at Eintracht Frankfurt?

“Bild” now speculates that it’s not just the departure of the top stars in attack – Randal Kolo Muani, Daichi Kamada and Jesper Lindström all left in the summer – that is currently troubling Götze. It’s quite possible that he’s putting too much pressure on himself at the moment.

As a leading player, Götze has the right to carry Eintracht’s offensive. He may also have the home European Championship in the summer of 2024 in mind. If he wants to get another chance to recommend himself for the German national team, he has to deliver as quickly as possible.

The first international matches under new national coach Julian Nagelsmann will take place in mid-October against the USA and Mexico. An international match against Austria is scheduled for November.
