Maria Sharapova spoke about the pay gap between men and women, even criticizing the WTA and ATP for the price difference between the two tours. In Toronto for the second annual UNMATCHED: Gender Equity in Sports conference, the former tennis icon pointed out that only 15-20% of the circuit offers parity, while the rest have a big gender pay gap : Sharapova, revealing the harsh reality of the gender gap in tennis, explained: “15-20% of tournaments are tied.
But where are the remaining 80%? That’s far from being the case. Unfortunately, these events do not have the most important media rights, they do not have the necessary visibility, so the subject of equality is not even discussed, because few people know that these tournaments exist in internationally.”
