In between Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers, there is a true love story. A true legend of the Californian franchise, the former playmaker maintains a very strong link with the Angelenos. Even after his departure from his position as president in 2019, he remains close to the owner Jeanie Buss.
And for his part, the 64-year-old could consider becoming the owner of his own team. Out of affection for the Lakers, Magic never considered another team. But the Lansing native could open the door… to the New York Knicks!
“I think it would be intriguing. The only team I would probably think of is the New York Knicks. Why? In terms of how the fans love basketball, you might have to think about that, because I love coming in New York, go to the Garden and watch the Knicks play.
I like being around fans who are passionate about their team, and Knicks fans are, and they’re smart. They are smart basketball fans so I should think about it. I think other than that, I probably would never consider being a part of another franchise.
We should really think about the possibility of being a minority owner of a team. But other than that, I would stay with the Lakers and even with my current role, that of a supporter, I’m happy to do that with the Lakers because, once again, I bleed purple and gold,” Magic Johnson repeated for the ‘Associated Press.
Incidentally, Magic Johnson nevertheless clarified that he had never raised the issue with the current New York boss James Dolan. But the idea exists in the back of his mind…
