Madison Keys knocks out Marketa Vondrousova to advance to semis at US Open

Very offensive, and very effective on break points to defend (nine out of nine) against Marketa Vondrousova, Madison Keys qualified for the semi-final, her sixth in a Grand Slam tournament. The American, who had eliminated Jessica Pegula in the previous round, never wavered during the meeting despite better resistance from the Wimbledon winner, and will be opposed to Aryna Sabalenka.

Interrupted eight minutes from the first game after a spectator felt unwell, the meeting was largely dominated by the American, very sure in her shots regularly finding the lines. Overwhelmed by the pace, Marketa Vondrousova could have scored a first game in the first set when, at 4-0, Madison Keys, facing a break point to save, was about to return to her chair after a missed volley. Except that the ball, flirting with the net, bounced just behind the net, putting the Czech in great difficulty…

After this funny point, the meeting was balanced. With momentum, Keys won the first set, while Vondrousova managed to close the game. At 4-3 for her, the Czech got five break points, all nicely saved by Keys, with three forehand attacks (long line, center and cross) and two service winners. The American took advantage of a few opposing faults in the next game, and ended up concluding on her serve on the third match point.
