Madison Keys wowed American fans on Wednesday night – by defeating Marketa Vondrousova, who was in the final here in 2017, 6-1, 6-4. But will that be enough against Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals?
Because the future world number one is increasingly focusing on her second Grand Slam triumph after demonstrating her strength. The 25-year-old from Belarus left no doubt about the winner in her 6-1, 6-4 quarter-final win against China’s Zheng Qinwen on Wednesday.
“I definitely played great tennis today,” said Sabalenka: “I still have a lot to do in New York this year and will only think about becoming number 1 after the US Open.”

Sabalenka beats Keys at Wimbledon
After the tournament in New York, Sabalenka replaces the Polish Iga Swiatek, who was at the top of the world rankings for 75 weeks. Swiatek had failed in the round of 16. Sabalenka maintained her impressive quarterfinal record at Grand Slams with her win against Zheng. She made all seven appearances in the round of eight successfully. Zheng missed out on becoming the third Chinese woman to reach the semifinals in New York after Peng Shuai (2014) and Li Na (2013).
The duel Aryna Sabalenka against Madison Keys was already in Wimbledon this year. Sabalenka was able to prevail in the quarter-finals with 6:2 and 6:4.
