Lucas Pouille Suffers Setback in Return to Competition After Injury

Lucas Pouille returned to competition in Rennes, where he lives, after his back injury in the last round of Wimbledon qualifying on June 29. At the Breton Challenger, the former 10th in the world, now 367th, had two solid performances against Constant Lestienne (108th), beaten 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, then Titouan Droguet (160th), out in two sets 6 -4, 6-2.

But on Friday, the semi-finalist of the 2019 Australian Open relapsed again. After winning his shutout service game to return to 2-2 in his quarter-final against Matteo Martineau (329th), Pouille requested an immediate medical timeout, complaining about his abs. And he gave up a few minutes later.

The 29-year-old Northerner had planned to continue his tour of French Challengers: Saint-Tropez next week, then Orléans and Mouilleron-le-Captif. It remains to be seen whether he will align with it.
