LSOM urges Mexico to admit labor complaints against Teklas Automotive – El Sol de México

The Mexican Labor Union League (LSOM) recognizes the commitment of the US government in defending the labor rights of workers and applauds the announcement by the Trade Representative, Katherine Tai, to request her Mexican counterpart to investigate the plant of the Teklas Automotive company, in Aguascalientes, under the Rapid Response Labor Mechanism (MLRR).

The LSOM filed the labor complaint on August 24, 2023, mainly due to the denial of union and labor rights of the workers of this plant that manufactures hoses for automotive fluids.

It was stated in the complaint request that the Teklas company threatened and fired four workers in retaliation for carrying out union organizing activities, which the United States government verified. After collecting evidence to determine the origin of the labor complaint.

As a result, the United States Trade Representative asked the Mexican authorities “to review whether the workers of the Teklas Automotive company are denied the right to freedom of association and collective bargaining,” said Julieta Mónica Morales, general secretary of the Mexican Workers Union League.

He stated: “We are vigilant and waiting for the Mexican authorities to admit the complaint and initiate the necessary investigation to determine that, in effect, the rights of the workers have been systematically violated by this company of Turkish origin.”

“We will not rest until there is justice for the workers. We also have confidence in the authorities of our country that they accept this complaint,” leader Morales emphasized to El Sol de México.

In turn, Salvador Villa Zermeño, a member of the LSOM committee in said company, who was fired on July 31 for trying to form an independent union, said in an interview for the OEM:

“For Tekla workers, the admission of this complaint is a huge opportunity to enforce workers’ rights.”

“We continue the fight to reinstate the four dismissed workers. Two men and two women, in retaliation for organizing ourselves as unions and raising our voices for justice,” he stressed.

He stated that from 2017 until May 1, 2023 “there was an employer contract with the CTM. The 400 or so workers at the plant never found out anything.”

“As the contract was not legitimized on May 1 before the Federal Center for Conciliation and Labor Registration, we took on the task of forming an independent union. For that reason they fired us; but through the Mexican Workers’ Union League we fight for the reinstatement of the 4 people fired for trying to organize ourselves as a union,” he stressed.

“We already had a favorable response from the United States government and we hope that our labor authorities accept the complaint within the T-MEC Mechanism,” he said with great confidence in the interview.

In fact, among its requests, the LSOM demands remedial measures in the face of the denial of rights, such as the reinstatement of dismissed workers.
