Lothar Matthäus Supports Julian Nagelsmann’s Interim Appointment as DFB Coach Ahead of Europa League Appearance

Before SC Freiburg’s Europa League guest appearance at Olympiakos Piraeus (NOW in LIVETICKER), Lothar Matthäus commented on the personnel.

“Whether it’s the right one… the decision has been made,” said the German record player on RTL: “I would have imagined that if Nagelsmann did it, he would do it until the 2026 World Cup.”

So it is “again only an interim solution. We’ll have to find someone again in eight months. But Julian can do it, he knows the Bundesliga, he knows the players, he has made many players better.”

According to SPORT1 information, Nagelsmann’s contract will initially only run until 2024, i.e. until the home European Championships in his own country. Depending on how the term of office goes, a longer-term commitment is also conceivable.

Matthäus’ appeal: “Now we should all support this decision and the DFB. The team needs this, the team deserves this. After twelve months in which a lot of things have been carried on her shoulders.”

The DFB team has “potential, we saw that against France. I’m already looking forward to this European Championship because I think we’re playing a better role than many people give the team credit for.”

Julian Nagelsmann’s first game as DFB coach will take place on October 14th. Then it’s against the USA before the duel with Mexico takes place four days later.
