From Borussia newcomer to top performer in no time!

He can be seen again and again as a TV expert – occasionally with his analyzes from Borussia Park. At the old Bökelberg, Lothar Matthäus (62) was often right in the middle when it came to the points.

World champion with emotional confession in TV show

Lothar Matthäus played for Borussia Mönchengladbach from 1979 to 1984. Immediately after moving from his Herzogenaurach, the world footballer from 1990 played his way into the Fohlenelf.

Matthäus’ development was so rapid that he celebrated his debut in the German national team as a teenager. He made his debut there in June 1980 – and in no less a setting than a European Championship.

Four years after his first major tournament, Matthäus left the Lower Rhine to move to FC Bayern Munich for the first time. The now 62-year-old spent a total of twelve years with the German record champions – in the meantime he played for Inter from 1988 to 1992.

While the 1990 world champion’s playing career, including the end of his career in New York, was limited to a total of four clubs, Matthäus’ coaching career was much more turbulent.

He worked in a total of seven countries – including Rapid Vienna in Austria, Partzian Belgrade in Serbia and as national coach of Hungary and Bulgaria.

However, Matthäus is now focusing on a station that basically could not have been successful at all. Because: The record national player only worked in Brazil for around six weeks.

In February 2006 he took up the job at Atletico Paranaense, only to quit in mid-March. Today Matthäus says: “I’m a little ashamed of having let the young players down.”

In the Sky show “My storyThe ex-Gladbacher becomes emotional when asked about his Brazil adventure: “From today’s perspective, I would approach it differently. I enjoyed the time. There were so many young players there, I was still sorry about that.”

Matthew continued: “I was a reference point for them. They were so open, so enthusiastic (…). It was great! If I were to change one thing in my life as a footballer: I can deal with defeats, all successes felt good. But what I did in Brazil was understandable to me at that moment. But it wasn’t fair to the others.”

A few months after his lightning exit in Brazil, Matthäus moved to RB Salzburg as an assistant coach – and worked there for a season with his former coach Giovanni Trapattoni (84).

Matthäus has now been working as an expert at the pay-TV channel Sky for over ten years. Christoph Kramer, another world champion with a Gladbach connection, is active in a similar role – he works for ZDF.
