“Losing the championship hurt me more than my cancer diagnosis”: Haller’s astonishing confession

The coronation of Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga last season, Sébastien Haller still has it in his throat. Borussia Dortmund let the title slip away on the last day because of a draw at home against Mainz (2-2). At the same time, the Bavarian club scored the winning goal in the last minute of regulation time against Cologne (2-1).

A crazy scenario which the Ivorian attacker returned to in an interview for Bild. “It really is like that. Losing the championship made me suffer more than my cancer diagnosis,” reacted the man who was sidelined from the field for more than six months, from July 2022 to January 2023 for testicular cancer.

“When you are sick, you can’t do anything. You have to accept it and get over it. But we had the title in hand, we could influence everything. In this case, you have to painfully accept that you made mistakes or made bad decisions,” continues Sébastien Haller, scorer of nine goals in the second part of the season.

“You think about what you could have done better”

His team regained the lead in the championship in the final days thanks to three consecutive victories but ended up cracking on the last day. The former Ajax striker had also missed a penalty in the first half which could have changed the course of the match. Trailing two zeros, BVB managed to catch up in the final moments of the game, but Bayern’s snatch victory extinguished all hope.

“You think about what you could have done better. But I also learned, especially during my illness, not to let negative things affect me so much,” concludes Sébastien Haller. Author of two goals in the German Cup, the Ivorian striker has yet to score in the league or the Champions League. Against PSG, he didn’t even come on.
