Leon Goretzka Criticizes Joachim Löw in Candid Interview

The worm has been in the German national team since the 2018 World Cup. At that time still responsible as a coach: Joachim Löw. He has now been criticized by a DFB player.

When the national team plays Japan (September 9) and France (September 12) in the coming days, national coach Hansi Flick will be under a lot of pressure. The most recent friendlies in Poland (0-1) and against Colombia (0-2) were disappointingly lost. Flick wants to bring about a turnaround nine months before the European Championships at home – and with positive results also get the fans back on board.

One who will be missing from the attempt to make amends is midfielder Leon Goretzka. The Munich player did not receive an invitation from Flick, was disappointed, but also combative. He wrote on Instagram that he accepted the coach’s decision – and would like to recommend himself again for a place in the national team with hard work.

Clear criticism of predecessor Löw

Goretzka thus became a victim of the performance principle in the national team, even if Flick was vague about the public justification for not taking the Bayern player into account. However, Goretzka himself revealed that that performance principle no longer applied to the DFB not so long ago.

In the Amazon documentary “All or Nothing – The National Team in Qatar”, which will be released on Friday, the 28-year-old speaks at the beginning of the first episode about the botched 2018 World Cup in Russia. He clearly criticizes Flick’s predecessor Joachim Löw.

“You didn’t have the feeling that it was about the one who performs, also playing,” said Goretzka about the World Cup five years ago. “As a result, the mood was very tense – and we were rightly eliminated,” said Goretzka about the historic preliminary round elimination.

A spicy statement from the midfield clearer – and a clear criticism of ex-coach Löw, who was allowed to continue at the time and only vacated his post after the round of 16 at the EM 2021.

Goretzka not first choice at the World Cup

However, as the documentation suggests, Goretzka’s statements were made at a time before the renewed elimination of the preliminary round at the World Cup in Qatar. Open, then, as Goretzka now thinks about the national team and the performance principle. In any case, the “hard hand” of the current coach was not interpreted to his advantage. Nevertheless, the former Schalke also has praise for Flick. “I appreciate that Hansi personally sat down with me here in Munich to explain it,” said Goretzka after Munich’s win against Gladbach (2-1) on Saturday.

Nevertheless: Flick already decided on İlkay Gündoğan and Joshua Kimmich in the starting XI in the German World Cup opening game against Japan – Goretzka was only left with the joker role. Now Flick has completely dispensed with him. A few months before the European Championship, it is clear that Goretzka is farther away from the national team than it has been for a long time.
