German Cup standings Bonn Capitals – Guggenberger Legionnaires Regensburg 0-1 (best-of-3 series)
The Guggenberg Legionnaires Regensburg won game one of the semi-final series in the German Baseball Cup against the Bonn Capitals 7-5 and took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series. Regensburg took the lead early and was ahead 7-1 until Bonn made things exciting again with four runs in the eighth inning. Games two and possibly three will take place again in Regensburg on Sunday from 12 p.m.
Eric Harms was responsible for the first three runs of the game. In the first inning, he first hit Alex Schmidt home with an RBI single and scored on a wild pitch himself. One period later, his sac fly increased the score to 3-0. Matt Vance extended the lead to four points in the third with an RBI single. Bonn got on the scoreboard for the first time in the sixth with an RBI single from Terrell Joyce.
But Regensburg immediately followed up and increased the lead to 7:1 with an RBI double from Daniel Patrice and a 2-run single from Nino Sacasa. The Capitals woke up in the eighth period of the game and provided another thrill in the final spurt. Wilson Lee brought home the Bonners’ second run with an RBI single. Joyce then scored on a wild pitch. An RBI single from Phildrick Llewellyn and a home steal from Daniel Lamb-Hunt brought the score to 5-7. But afterwards there was no longer enough.
The German Baseball Cup was already launched in 2019, but Corona put a stop to the first events, so the cup will make its debut in the 2023 season. The losers from the quarterfinals met in the first round. The winners of the first round then met the losers from the semi-finals. In the current round – the semi-finals of the cup – the winners of the second round face each other. The winner of the pairing between Bonn and Regensburg will then meet the runner-up in the final on October 7th and 8th.
