Latvian U-18 Basketball Teams Face Mixed Results in World Cup

The Latvian U-18 women’s national team, which consists of Amanda Baumgarte, Elīna Briede, Annija Brence and Katrīna Miller, and which was seeded with number 14, lost 15:17 to Japan, which received the sixth number. Miller scored seven, Briede – six, and Brence and Baumgarte – one point each. Konoha Yamamiya and Maho Mitsugi scored six points each for the opponents. The course of the competition was adjusted by the weather, and the games were moved indoors.

In the basketball subgroup, they defeated Egypt (1st) with 21:8, scored a technical victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo, which did not come to the championship, and also beat Tunisia (17th) with 19:13 and Chile (8th) with 22:17.

Last year’s European vice-champions in the U-17 group Toms Markus Salnājs, Jānis Censonis, Edvards Egle and Kristiāns Artis Pastors, who were seeded fourth in the competition, lost 13:18 to Slovenia (10th) in the quarter-finals.

Egle scored five, Censonis – four, Pastors – three and Salnājs – one point. Eric Gustin scored six points for the opponents.

In the subgroup, basketball players defeated Kyrgyzstan (5th) with 22:10, India (13th) with 21:13 and Ukraine (12th) with 21:15, but lost to Israel (20th) with 19:22.

In the U-18 World Cup, the best achievement of Latvian basketball players so far has been fifth place in the men’s competition in 2022 and sixth place in the women’s tournament in 2021.
