After Spain’s final victory at the World Cup, Luis Rubiales kissed player Jennifer Hermoso against her will. Despite great public pressure, the head of the association had long resisted resignation. He has now announced that he will be retiring from his positions.
After the kissing scandal at the World Cup, Spain’s football association president Luis Rubiales announced in an interview that he wanted to resign from his position. When asked by presenter Piers Morgan if he would resign, Rubiales said: “Yes, I will.”
Morgan published a short excerpt from the interview with the 46-year-old on Sunday evening on Portal X (formerly Twitter). According to Morgan, the conversation was said to have taken place this Sunday. The full episode of the talk show “Piers Morgan Uncensored” has not yet aired. Rubiales kissed player Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth against her will at the award ceremony after the World Cup final on August 20th.

The public prosecutor’s office filed a lawsuit against Rubiales for sexual assault last week. “The prosecution requests that Luis Rubiales be heard as the accused and Jenni Hermoso as the victim,” she said on Friday.
A judge at the National Court must now decide whether to grant the prosecutor’s request. If he accepts it, an investigating judge will be appointed to lead an investigation. He may end up recommending a trial or dismissing the case.
