Professional cyclist Remco Evenepoel missed another leap to the top of the overall standings at the 78th Vuelta. After the steep climb of around 1700 meters to La Laguna Negra de Vinuesa, which the 23-year-old only finished 28th, the American Sepp Kuss defended his lead from the Belgian. After 163.2 kilometers on the eleventh stage this Wednesday, the Spaniard Jesus Herrada won the mountain finish ahead of the French Romain Gregoire and the Dane Andreas Kron.

After three stages in the red jersey, Evenepoel had to relinquish the lead on the sixth day of the Vuelta. He lost a lot of time to the top. On Wednesday, Kuss and Evenepoel just finished, a few minutes behind Herrada in a group of favorites that also include three-time Vuelta winner Primoz Roglic (Slovenia) and Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard (Denmark).

The best German, Emanuel Buchmann from the Bora-hansgrohe team, was 65th, 6:48 minutes behind. Teammate Lennard Kämna, who won the ninth Vuelta stage on Sunday, finished 95th.
