Karlsruhe and Lautern Draw 1-1 in High-Scoring Derby

Karlsruhe and Lautern drew a fair 1-1 in the derby, which offered a festival of opportunities in the high-class first round. Both teams could have won in the final phase.

At KSC there wasn’t enough time for Stindl, who wasn’t in the squad after his hand surgery. Christian Eichner sent Matanovic (starting eleven debut) onto the pitch instead of the veteran compared to the 1:3 in Düsseldorf.

Lautern’s coach Dirk Schuster saw no reason to change his starting lineup, which won 3-1 against 1. FC Nürnberg.

Game grade

The game offered a lot of pace and chances in the first half, helped by Ache’s early lead; significantly less entertainment value after the break, apart from the final phase.

For the FCK, the duel in the Wildpark got off to a perfect start: the first attack was already in place, and after Zimmer’s cross, the current goal scorer, Ache, was able to celebrate his fifth goal of the season (5th).

Matanovic searched in vain for a quick answer for KSC (7th). After that, despite having over 70 percent possession of the ball, the Baden team initially barely got through against the lurking Palatinate team, who countered extremely dangerously and were close to making it 2-0 (Raschl, 13th, Ache, 16th).

Eichner’s protégés continued to clearly dominate, but the offensive game was tough against the guests’ strong defense, and Gondorf also missed from a promising position (23′).

Krahl parries sensationally – Ritter only hits the aluminum

It took half an hour before KSC’s constant onslaught had an effect on the Lauter defense – the derby now picked up speed. Schleusener had to equalize, but his header from five meters from Krahl failed (30′). Karlsruhe’s triple chance was perfect after Elvedi Matanovic’s shot deflected just past the left (31′) and Franke’s header was also centimeters away (32′).

6th matchday – 2nd Bundesliga

The Red Devils almost put a pinprick in return, underlining their danger: Ritter only hit the post (33′).

Wanitzek does it from the point

After Heise tested Krahl (43′), KSC rewarded themselves for their efforts in stoppage time of the first half. After slight contact from Kraus against Schleusener, Aytekin pointed to the point and Wanitzek converted the penalty to make the score 1-1 (45th + 5th).

The second half began with more active guests who controlled the game while the home team lost their rhythm. Apart from a direct Raschl free kick (53′), hardly anything happened in front of either goal for a long time and the game petered out.

Both coaches brought in fresh staff, a double change at FCK and three new ones at KSC should breathe new life into the game.

Two jokers immediately attracted attention: Lautern’s Opoku (72′) and, now livelier, Karlsruhe’s Zivzivadze (73′). The game was still in a high phase, after Kraus’ long-range shot (76′), the hosts were initially closer to victory, but Kraus cleared against fog in front of the line (78′) and Gondorf’s remarkable left-foot shot whizzed centimeters past the corner (81′). Drewes finally thwarted the last chance against Opoku (88′) – the score remained 1-1.

Karlsruher SC will play on September 23rd. (Saturday, 1 p.m.) at SpVgg Greuther Fürth. Hansa Rostock is waiting for 1. FC Kaiserslautern one day later (Sunday, 1:30 p.m.).
