Johan Derksen scathing about ‘charlatan’ within Ajax: ‘Totally unsuitable’

Johan Derksen is scathing about Maurits Hendriks. The analyst calls Ajax’s Chief Sports Officer a ‘charlatan’ in Today Inside and states that he is ‘completely unsuitable’. Hendriks has been under fire for some time, as have the Supervisory Board of the Amsterdam team and the now dismissed director of football affairs Sven Mislintat.
The administrative chaos within Ajax has already led to the departure of Mislintat and Supervisory Board chairman Pier Eringa. The latter will most likely be succeeded by Michael van Praag, while Leo van Wijk also appears to be joining the Supervisory Board. The cleaning in the Johan Cruijff ArenA therefore seems far from complete, as Hendriks, among others, is also under pressure. He was already identified by De Telegraaf as the main culprit of the crisis in which Ajax finds itself.
On Thursday evening, during the broadcast of Today Inside, images were shown of an interview with Hendriks, who discussed, among other things, setbacks in life and coaching. After the clip, Derksen is scathing. “But would it also have been good for Ajax that they hired a charlatan who stole 115 million?” Presenter Wilfred Genee joins in: “Yes, the same man who introduced the losers flight to the Olympic athletes!” Hendriks, technical director of sports umbrella organization NOC*NSF in 2016, allowed the non-medal winners to leave Rio de Janeiro earlier, where the Olympic Games were being held at the time.
“When you hear this, you know that this man is completely unsuitable, right?” Derksen continues. “And he still tries to make himself interesting, like: I invented it, because I grew up in top sport.” Sports marketer Chris Woerts, also present at the program, speaks of a ‘dead man walking’. “Alex Kroes (the incoming general manager, ed.) has already said that the Chief Sports Officer, which he is, will no longer be retained.” Derksen concludes: “It is also a completely unnecessary function!” The Chief Sports Officer of Ajax is concerned, among other things, with the top sports organization and the further development of a top sports culture.
