Italian Judoka Jean Carletti Wins Fifth Gold Medal at European Junior Championships

There is no four without five. And the fifth gold medal for Italy came with Jean Carlettifirst in the 100 kg on the third day of the European junior championships currently being held in The Hague, in the Netherlands. For Italy, this is the seventh medal, the fifth gold, in this continental event which places it unquestionably in first place in the ranking by nations, ahead of Georgia with 4 medals (3 gold) and the Netherlands with three medals (all gold). Irresistible and exuberant on the tatami, Jean Carletti began his climb to gold in the 100 kg with the Frenchman Maxence Bordin, who challenged the blue to win an extremely up-and-down match. Then it was a wazari that awarded the victory to Carletti in the match against the Georgian Mikheil Japaridze, then the comeback ippon against the Dutch Joes Schell and, in the final, the double tai otoshi, wazari and ippon, against the Frenchman Mathias Anglionin . A triumph!

“Today I felt good, I was ready! -he said Jean Carletti– It was an intense and beautiful race. It is a medal dreamed of and desired with so much heart and dedication. I feel the duty and pleasure to thank the army sports group that welcomed me and supports me, the Akiyama club with which I train and the boys with whom I share the tatami. Not least my family and all my friends who support me. Today I felt good, I was ready! It was an intense and beautiful race. It is a medal dreamed of and desired with so much heart and dedication. Nothing to be done instead for Tommaso Fava who, in the 90 kg, after overcoming the Spaniard Aaron Santamaria Rodriguez (three golden score sanctions), was defeated by the Armenian Gor Karapetyan, while Tiziana Marini in the +78 kg was immobilized in first place turn from Azerbaijani Nigar Suleymanova.

Tomorrow the mixed-teams is scheduled with Italy drawn in pool D and expected in the first round by Ukraine.

The technical staff’s comment on the third day: “Five gold, one silver, one bronze at a European Championship represent not only the best performance ever at a Junior European Championship, but the best ever overall at a European Championship. The previous one was with 4 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze at the 2019 European Cadet Championship. That time Italy finished first in the medal table and even today we are on the top of Europe but with the Junior class. Thanks go first of all to the families of these athletes who, most of the time, take on the burden of the travel. Secondly, thanks are due to the clubs and coaches who prepare these kids. Thirdly, it must be remembered that these results are not the result of luck or exceptional events and now, with these generations, all the investments made by our Federation in the youth classes from 2005 onwards are materializing. When the Federation decided to invest in these classes, it was a huge success to come home with a gold medal and every year we fought to have at least this result. Those generations of athletes, many of whom today are already Olympic or world medalists, showed that it could be done. Subsequent generations followed them in this example and, continuing like this, we will become even stronger even on an absolute level as the objective data is demonstrating. Tomorrow there will be the team race and we must stay focused to give all our supporters further great satisfaction.”

While waiting for the protagonists’ comments, the results of the third day are published.
