At 45, Gennaro Gattuso is used to big clubs and high-pressure environments. The former midfielder turned coach worked at AC Milan and Naples in particular. At Olympique de Marseille, his coaching contract runs until the end of this season, with another season optional. The Italian arrives at the Marseille club with a staff of five people.
President Pablo Longoria, in the midst of the Olympian crisis, announced last Friday that he remained in office and that he was going to file a complaint after threats from certain supporters group leaders, during the September 18 meeting. He has since started looking for a new coach, with Pancho Abardonado taking over as interim coach.
Gattuso, who had been courted by Lyon before being overtaken by his compatriot Fabio Grosso, will have to revive a team which has just lost 4-0 against PSG at the Parc des Princes and travels to Monaco on Saturday September 30 for a new shock, during the 7th day of the French championship.
An emblematic character player for Milan in the 2000s, world champion in 2006, Gennaro Gattuso won the Italian Cup as coach with Naples in 2020. His only major trophy. After that, he was the short-lived coach of Fiorentina. His last experience on the bench lasted only six months in Valencia (2022-January 2023), in Spain. Gattuso has been free from any contract since his ouster from the Spanish club.
