Inside the Journey of Victor Wembanyama: A Documentary on the Rise of a French Basketball Phenomenon

In the documentary “Victor Wembanyama, U1NIQUE”, Marc Sauvourel and David Tiago Ribeiro offer CANAL+ subscribers the opportunity to discover, on October 8, behind the scenes of a year spent with the man who became the first French player drafted in first position by an NBA franchise.

Head in the clouds. The documentary “Victor Wembanyama, U1NIQUE”, which will be available on October 8 from 9 p.m. on CANAL+ as well as on the myCANAL streaming platform, offers subscribers a dizzying dive into the intimacy of the new phenomenon on the planet basketball. Directors Marc Sauvourel and David Tiago Ribeiro benefited from unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to the man who became, last June, the first French player in history drafted in first position by an NBA franchise.

Next season, Victor Wembanyama will play for the San Antonio Spurs, in the prestigious American league where he is presented as the most anticipated young prospect in history since LeBron James in 2003. But before that, the French pivot with exceptional measurements (2.24m) had to build his own path. From his beginnings at club, notably at Nanterre, during his youth, until his last year in the squad of Metropolitans 92, at Levallois, under the caring – but demanding – eye of his coach, Vincent Collet, who is also the coach of the French team, the documentary gives a voice to those – coaches, physical trainers, etc. – who have followed its evolution over the years.

A generational talent

They all explain why, beyond his size, Victor Wembanyama is a unique player of his kind, a generational talent who, if his health permits, could make a lasting mark on the history of his sport. Viewers also discover the young man’s entourage, starting with his family, more united than ever around him. A decisive support in his journey, and in the construction of his mind to any test. Victor Wembanyama knows what he is capable of, and never fears to assert it.

Many French basketball personalities, notably Tony Parker, quadruple NBA champion with the San Antonio Spurs in 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014 (and who has just entered the Hall of Fame, a first for a French player), or Rudy Gobert, current center of the Minnesota Timberwolves, speak about his talent, and the expectations – “unreal” according to Tony Parker – which surround him as he prepares to begin his NBA career.

Note that in the week of October 1 to 8, CANAL+ will bring this “UN1QUE” event to its subscribers with several nods to Victor Wembanyama during the various sports broadcasts, particularly during the Champions League matches. The broadcast of the documentary will be followed by a program called “Un1que, the show”, from 10:55 p.m.
