Indonesian U23 National Team Makes History by Qualifying for 2024 U23 Asian Cup: A Success Story under Shin Tae-yong

KOMPAS.com – The Indonesian U23 National Team has confirmed that it will reach the final round of the 2024 U23 Asian Cup. This is a sweet story of Indonesian football in the Shin Tae-yong era.

The Indonesian U23 national team advanced to the final round of the 2024 U23 Asian Cup after winning Group K in the qualifying round with six points.

The Indonesian U23 national team got a record of six points because they won two wins over Taiwan (9-0) and Turkmenistan (2-0).

“Indeed, my football philosophy is that it is not the striker who has to score goals,” said Shin Tae-yong in a press conference session after the Indonesia vs Turkmenistan U23 national team match on Tuesday (12/9/2023).

“Anyone can score goals from various positions, so I emphasize that especially during training, I make the players focus so that anyone can score goals,” he continued.

Even so, STY saw one obstacle. He is worried that foreign players such as Elkan Baggott, Rafael Struick and Pratama Arhan cannot be released by their respective clubs.

“I dare say, we can quite compete in the AFC later,” said the former South Korean national team coach.

“The only problem is, like Ivar Jenner, Elkan Baggott, Rafael and Pratama Arhan, overseas players, whether they can be released by the club or not in April,” he explained.

“If I can call all of these overseas players, I am brave and confident to challenge the teams in Asia,” he continued.

The 53 year old coach has indeed written a sweet story for Indonesian football, even though he has never won a championship.
