“I didn’t think I’d be a coach, yet, but I had to take the opportunity”

Albert Sàbat (Llagostera, 1985) faces his first experience as first coach on the bench of the CB Salt, after the club reached an agreement with Básquet Girona to keep their subsidiary’s place in the EBA League. The ex-player goes from assistant to Aíto in the ACB, to technician in the EBA.

What does the new stage at CB Salt look like to you? Do you take it as a new challenge?

Really good. I am very excited and eager to start this new stage that will be new for me. I am very happy. It’s been three weeks since we started and we want to have a great season.

I imagine the club has welcomed him with open arms. Has his signing generated excitement at Salt?

I don’t know… People should be asked. I’m happy with the way I’ve been received in Salt and with the link I have with Básquet Girona, also with the bet that is being made for rooting in the territory. I am very pleased.

Was becoming a head coach one of your short-term goals?

I hadn’t really thought about it yet, but I was given the opportunity. I immediately said yes, I was very excited and looking forward to it.

Did you regret not continuing on the coaching staff of Básquet Girona?

Things turned out that way. I was given the opportunity to take the Leap and I immediately said yes. I didn’t think any further, but I thought it could be a good opportunity for me to continue my training. It’s my first time as a head coach and it’s very different from being an assistant.

Last season he should learn a lot of things alongsideAito García Reneses i Lubos Barton.

Of course! It was a season of constant learning. Being next to Aíto was a continuous and daily learning, it was spectacular. I also learned a lot from Lubos and Miki (Fuentes). Now I hope to export things from your ideas to my team.

Did Aíto give you any advice?

We still talk from time to time. He always gives me good advice and messages. Like I said, I learned a lot from him, he taught me something new every day.

He remains linked to Básquet Girona due to the agreement with CB Salt. Would you like to return in the future?

I don’t think about it. It is a path in the process that I had to take. A little more I’m not much for thinking about the future, but I think about the training ahead of me, the next games… I want to keep improving and be a good coach. The goal is to make the players, some of whom are very young, improve.

He talked about it with Marc Gasol?

No, we didn’t talk about it. I don’t think about it either.

What can you expect from this season in the EBA League?

I will try for the players to improve and for a good work methodology to be seen, for the effort to be noticed on the court. The results will mark the way, but for us it is not the main fixation. I want the team to work, play well and, above all, compete. I also hope to hook the Salt fans, who will enjoy EBA League basketball again. We are very excited.

Are you happy with the team that has been put together?

Very happy. They are very hard working guys. They are quite young, with a veteran player (Carles Nadal) who will help us complement the youth. They are very hardworking, enthusiastic and eager to learn. They listen a lot and give one hundred percent. I am very happy.

Friendly guillotine

Is it risky to bet almost everything on the young?

Young people have this desire to make a place for themselves and we will try to take advantage of it.

And what do you think of the preseason? Are you seeing the first strokes of Albert Sàbat’s CB Salt in the Catalan League?

It’s been three weeks. We will go little by little, but we are happy with the progress we are making. We want to get to the start of the season, on Sunday, October 1, in the best way possible. We want to compete in the Catalan League. We take it as training for this pre-season.
