Hurricane Jova: grows to category 5 and causes rain in Mexico – El Sol de México

Hurricane Jova intensified to category 5 in the Mexican Pacific, where it will cause rain, gusts of wind and waves in the western states of the country, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported Thursday.

The phenomenon, which emerged on Tuesday as a tropical storm and grew to a hurricane on Wednesday, was located 455 kilometers southwest of Socorro Island and 855 kilometers from Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, in the latest advisory from the SMN.

Jova is moving west-northwest at 26 kilometers per hour with sustained winds of 260 kilometers per hour and gusts of 315 kilometers per hour.

Although it is far from Mexican territory, “its extensive cloud bands reinforce the probability of very heavy punctual rains in Nayarit and Sinaloa; strong punctuals in Colima and Jalisco; as well as rains with showers in Baja California Sur,” the Meteorological Department warned.

It also predicted wind with gusts of 40 to 60 kilometers and waves of 2 to 4 meters high on the coasts of Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa.

“The gusts of wind and waves will extend in the following hours towards the coast of Baja California Sur,” estimated the body of the National Water Commission (Conagua).

For this reason, the SMN requested “extreme precautions for the general population in the areas of the mentioned states due to rain, wind and waves, including maritime navigation, and to comply with the recommendations issued by the authorities of the National Civil Protection System”.

Jova is the tenth named cyclone this season in the Pacific, where Adrian, Beatriz, Calvin, Dora, Eugene, Fernanda, Greg, Hilary and Irwin have also formed.

Of these, the most damaging has been Hilary, who in August left four dead in the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur and Sinaloa.

The Government of Mexico predicted in May the formation of up to 38 named cyclones in the 2023 season, of which five would hit the country.

Of that number, between 16 and 22 systems could occur in the Pacific Ocean, and between 10 and 16 in the Atlantic.
