HSV loses in Elversberg, Düsseldorf becomes new league leader

Surprise in Saarland: SV Elversberg has toppled league leaders Hamburger SV and inflicted their first defeat of the season on the big promotion favorites in the second Bundesliga. The promoted team deservedly defeated HSV 2-1 and celebrated the first second division home win in the club’s history.

Jannik Rochelt (9th) and Luca Schnellbacher (60th) scored the goals for Elversberg – and hit Hamburg to the core. Shortly before the end, the favorite only managed to make it 1:2 (89′) thanks to Moritz Heyer.

Although Hamburg had more possession of the ball, the hosts were more aggressive in the duels and created significantly better chances.

In front of 10,150 spectators, HSV revealed primarily defensive weaknesses and made life difficult for themselves with individual mistakes. After three games without conceding a goal, Dennis Hadzikadunic made a serious mistake in the early stages. Before the score was 0-1, the HSV defender carelessly lost the ball in his own penalty area, so that Rochelt only had to push it in.

As a result, the SVE attacker was named player of the game. Schnellbacher pushed his exemplary cross over the line after a counterattack to make it 2-0. A supposed Rochelt goal (44th) was rightly disallowed due to offside, HSV keeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes parried twice with strong reflexes (45th + 3/47th).

And HSV? He was unlucky twice when goals from Robert Glatzel (3rd/offside) and Jean-Luc Dompe (18th/foul) were denied recognition after video evidence.

The courageous final offensive in the six minutes of stoppage time was no longer rewarded. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, HSV had the equalizer twice.

Düsseldorf wins and benefits

Due to Hamburg’s bankruptcy, Fortuna Düsseldorf was able to take the lead in the table, at least temporarily. With a 3-1 win at Hansa Rostock, their third success in a row, after goals from Christos Tzolis (17th), Andre Hoffmann (35th) and Jona Niemiec (88th), the Rhinelanders, who were still undefeated on foreign pitches, took first place.

Rostock, on the other hand, had to lose contact with the top teams after their second home defeat, despite Jasper van der Werff’s consolation goal (45th).

Düsseldorf took command in the early stages in front of 24,600 spectators. Thanks to their determined play and strength in duels, coach Daniel Thioune’s team took the edge off the hosts. All the more unexpectedly, the former DFB Cup winner dropped after his second goal and unnecessarily allowed the hosts to come back into the game.

Even after the break, Fortuna were no longer able to develop the superiority they had in the first 30 minutes. Rostock increasingly pushed for the equalizer with force, but mostly the hasty attacks lacked the decisive move to the Düsseldorf goal. Opportunities were rare on both sides. Niemiec then made everything clear.

Draw in the southwest derby

Meanwhile, 1. FC Kaiserslautern missed their fourth win in a row. The Red Devils drew 1-1 in the southwest derby at Karlsruher SC and remain at the top of the table with ten points.

Ragnar Ache (5th) scored the early opening goal for FCK. The Baden team equalized in stoppage time in the first half with a penalty kick from Marvin Wanitzek (45th + 5). Kevin Kraus caused the penalty to Fabian Schleusener.

Lautern’s Tobias Raschl (13th) even had the chance to make it 2-0, but goalkeeper Patrick Drewes failed. The Lauterers seemed very confident after the opening goal. In the 16th minute, Ache’s header also failed to hit the KSC keeper.

It wasn’t until the 30th minute that the hosts had their first opportunity to equalize. However, Schleusener found his match in goalkeeper Julian Krahl, who responded brilliantly. Lautern’s Marlon Ritter was also unlucky with a shot that hit the post (33′). In stoppage time, KSC made it 1-1.

To the delight of the fans, both teams exchanged blows with plenty of chances on both sides.
