Salvation for the Bergischer HC: In the derby against VfL Gummersbach, the “Lions” celebrated their first win of the season in the handball Bundesliga.

The Bergische HC achieved its first win of the season in the handball Bundesliga and won the derby at VfL Gummersbach with 33:27 (16:12). Player of the day was goalkeeper Peter Johannesson.

Good start for VfL

VfL Gummersbach got off to a better start in the derby against Bergischer HC. After around five minutes, Krisjan Horzen made it 5-2 – it seemed as if the BHC’s crisis was continuing. But the still winless “Bergische Löwen” fought their way into the game. Halfway through the first half, the guests took the lead for the first time – Aron Seesing scored to make it 8:7.

Gummersbach, on the other hand, increasingly found his master in goalkeeper Peter Johannesson. The Bergische HC was now fully there and took a three-goal lead. As a result, the BHC acted surprisingly calmly and self-confidently, even though the guests have yet to win the league. The guests went into the break with a score of 16:12.

Johannesson becomes the match winner

After the break, the spectators were treated to a balanced game. Good attacks alternated with missed throws on both sides, and Gummersbach was unable to shorten the gap. However, the hosts remained within striking distance of the BHC. But he had a wall in the back of the goal – Johannesson crowned his best day with one save after another. VfL found no remedy against this.

A good six minutes before the end, Bergische HC had a well-deserved lead of six goals and the game was decided. In the final phase, VfL only tried to limit the damage. In the end, the hosts’ offense was too weak and the defense was sometimes too full of holes.
