Pep Guardiola is the favorite for the England bench when, in 2024, the current contract of Gareth Southgate expires, intending to leave the leadership of the Three Lions at the end of the next European Championship. The negotiation with the Catalan coach, which promises to be far from simple for various reasons, not least the economic one, has not yet officially begun. But – writes the English press today – the English Football Association (FA) is cautiously optimistic of being able to convince the Catalan coach, whose contract with Manchester City, however, will not expire before 2025. One more obstacle for the FA, which dreams to appear at the next World Cup – scheduled for 2026 in the United States, Mexico and Canada – with Guardiola on the bench. On the other hand, the City manager himself has never made a secret of wanting to lead a national team one day, but the Spanish one could be barred from him due to his open support for the Catalan independence cause.
