Goalkeeping Coach Marcus Otte Lands New Role with US National Team

The 32-year-old now revealed on the Borussia website how he got the job. He said: “A while ago the US FA approached me and asked if I would have time for an exchange with coach Gregg Berhalter and sporting director Matt Crocker.”

“They then told me in a video call that they would like to expand the team around the national team and would like to sign me as goalkeeping coach for the next international game periods,” Otte continued.

At the end of August, according to gladbachlive.de, there were already rumors that the club might have to look for a goalkeeping coach. Otte also thought about this and wondered whether he could even imagine doing both jobs at the same time.

“When I was convinced that it could work, I spoke to Roland Virkus and Nils Schmadtke about the idea. Both were very open and understood what appealed to me about getting to know working for an association,” he explained.

Also: “I think that the experience is not only interesting for me, but can also help Borussia to be even better positioned in terms of player scouting for the Bundesliga and in terms of their network in the USA.”

According to Otte, the new US job could also be an opportunity for other goalkeeping coaches internally: “We have a very good team and will solve it internally. It’s also a good opportunity to give the other goalkeeper coaches new experiences and at the same time to give our boys different impulses in training over the ten days.”

In Otte’s absence, U23 goalkeeping coach Milenko Gilic will take over the goalkeeping training for the pros in the coming days.
