Trainer: Gordon Herbert (64)

Gordon Herbert has been the national basketball coach since September 2021, led the team to European Championship bronze last year and is now on the verge of a really big coup.

Herbert was born in Penticton, Canada. His mother is a sports teacher and his father is a lawyer. He began his professional playing career with Hyvinkään Tahko in Finland.

Herbert played for six different clubs in Finland until 1994. With the Canadian national team he took part in the 1984 Olympic Games and the 1986 World Cup. His playing career ended in 1994 after several knee operations.

Herbert also began his coaching career in Finland before moving to Würzburg in the Basketball Bundesliga in Austria. In the 2011/2012 season, after numerous previous positions, he trained with Alba Berlin, then moved on to the Fraport Skyliners in Frankfurt.

Between 2005 and 2006, Herbert was in charge of the Georgian national team. In February 2018, he was appointed coach of the Canadian national team to lead them through World Cup qualifying for the 2019 World Cup. In September 2021 he took the step as national coach for the DBB team.

Best player against the USA: Andreas Obst (27)

In the World Cup semi-final against the USA (113:111), Obst was the best scorer of the game with 24 points and was voted player of the game after the match.

Obst came through the youth ranks at Brose Bamberg and was used in the Bundesliga for the first time in the 2014/15 season. After two more Bundesliga stops and a trip to Spain, he went to Ulm. He has been under contract with FC Bayern since summer 2021.

At the U20 European Championships in Helsinki in 2016, he reached fourth place with the German selection and recorded the highest average points score within the DBB team during the tournament.

He was called up to the German senior national team for the first time at the beginning of November 2017 and made his debut in the World Cup qualifier against Georgia at the end of the month. Since then, the shooting guard has played 50 international games.

The point guard was selected 17th in the 2013 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks and played there until 2018. After stints with the LA Lakers (2020 to 2021 and 2022 to 2023) and the Boston Celtics (2021 to 2022), among others He is currently under contract with the Toronto Raptors.

Schröder made his debut for the German national team in July 2014 in a friendly against Finland in Leipzig. Since then he has played 65 international matches. He was the best German player in the sensational bronze win at the home European Championships in 2022.

Schröder is the son of a Gambian mother (owner of a hair salon) and a German father (died of cancer in 2009). He has an older and a younger brother and an older and a younger sister.

In July 2019, Dennis Schröder married his long-time girlfriend Ellen Ziolo, with whom he now has two sons and a daughter.

In addition to Schröder, three other DBB stars play in the NBA: the Wagner brothers Franz and Moritz (Orlando Magic) and Daniel Theis (Indiana Pacers).

Top talent: Franz Wagner (22)

Berlin-born Franz Wagner (2.08 meters) was selected eighth overall in the 2021 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic and has been playing for the club ever since. His older brother Moritz Wagner (26) is also under contract there. Before his NBA commitment, Franz was under contract for Alba Berlin (2017 to 2019) and for Lokomotiv Bernau for a year.

At the end of April 2018, Wagner celebrated his debut in the Bundesliga, replacing his brother Moritz as the youngest Alba player in the Bundesliga at the age of 16.

At the end of December 2021, Wagner scored 38 points against the Milwaukee Bucks (110:127), equaling the record set by Dennis Scott and Shaquille O’Neal, who also achieved this value in one game in 1990 and 1993, respectively, in their first NBA year had reached Orlando.
