With the happy 81:79 quarter-final victory of the German basketball team against outsiders Latvia, many an observer will have found it irritating how long coach Gordon Herbert stuck with Dennis Schröder. It was obvious that the playmaker had had an extremely weak day. And Herbert? Stood stoically on the edge of the field and watched Schröder mess up one shot after the other, how he just couldn’t get the game under control, how he wanted to force it in the final seconds and thus still give the Latvians the opportunity to win.
