German Sports Funding Cuts Under Review: Signals of Change Welcomed by DOSB President

In the debate about funding cuts for German sport, DOSB President Thomas Weikert welcomed the signs of a change in policy.

“Today we also recognize the first signals from the government and parliament that there will be improvements in favor of sport,” said the 61-year-old at the parliamentary evening of the German Olympic Sports Confederation.

“The entire society, our athletes, want world-class performance. This requires reliable framework conditions that are financial and structural in nature,” said Weikert at the French Embassy.

The federal government’s initially planned reduction in sports funding for 2024 by 27 million euros had caused strong criticism from the sports community. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD), who is also responsible for sport, reiterated that she was confident that the funding cuts could be averted.

“I can cautiously say that we are working on very good solutions and that we do not have to make any cuts,” said Faeser. This particularly affects institutions such as the Institute for Research and Development of Sports Equipment (FES) or the Institute for Applied Training Science (IAT), which support athletes with technical know-how, among other things.
