The men’s quadruple sculls was the first German boat to win the Olympic ticket at the World Rowing Championships in Belgrade by reaching the final. Things didn’t go so well for other boats.
Anton Finger, Max Appel, Tim Ole Naske and Moritz Wolff overtook Ukraine in the last few meters of the semifinals and took the third place they needed. The battle for the medals is on Saturday.
“I really can’t describe the feeling at the moment. It was a team effort. I just love the guys, I really, really love them,” said Naske, who had reached the final at the 2017 World Cup: “Next year after Driving Paris is more than a dream come true.”
Women’s quadruple misses final
The women’s quad scull, on the other hand, missed the final, as did the four without a helmswoman. In the battle for Paris 2024, both boats now need a win in the B run to avoid having to hope for the tricky post-qualification in May 2024.
Lightweight men’s double scull capsizes
The lightweight men’s double scull had a bad day: Paul Leerkamp and Jonathan Rommelmann lost their balance at the 1,000 meter mark in the semifinals and fell into the water. Both climbed back into the boat with some difficulty, but only finished more than three minutes behind the competition. Until the faux pas, the duo was in fourth place, third place would have meant entry into the final. Now a victory in the B final is needed for the Olympic ticket.
