Chile did not get off to a good start in the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, with a 3-1 defeat against Uruguay at the Centenario Stadium. After the game, Gary Medel spoke and left a small message for his coach, Eduardo Berizzo.

“The coach should be asked about the approach,” he said, and assured that Arturo Vidal, who was a substitute and came on in the second half, “has great category and quality, but the coach chooses the starting eleven.”

“On Tuesday we have a match against a direct rival. A very complicated tie is coming, with an almost new team,” he indicated, adding: “It was a very hard blow for us. It was a complicated game, with many mistakes, such as turnovers, they caught us on the back foot there.”

Finally, he dedicated a few words to Marcelo Bielsa, current technical director of the Uruguayan team and who coached him in La Roja between 2007 and 2011: “He was very important in my career, I have a great appreciation for him because he taught me a lot.”
