From Irrelevance to Success: Inspiring Stories of NFL Players Who Defied Expectations

Getting to the NFL is the dream of thousands of athletes who seek fame in American football, the king of sports in the United States. Every year dozens of college players apply to be selected in the Draft. Everyone wants to avoid one thing: being named, Mr. Irrelevant.

Mr. Irrelevant is the last player selected and from the nickname it is not difficult to deduce that no one expects anything from them.

The nickname was born in 1976, when former player Paul Slata took the job of announcing this latest choice and from there the Irrelevant Week was born, in which the player who takes the nickname is invited along with his family to a series of publicity activities.

Probably the most successful player to emerge from irrelevance is kicker Ryan Succop.

NFL teams picked 255 players before him. The South Carolina graduate had a career that ended in 2022, starting for the Kansas City Chiefs, Tennessee Titans and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Although his career has been long, he did not achieve the success of Marty Moore, who won a Superbowl with the New England Patriots in 2001, along with the legendary Tom Brady.

And if you start your career successfully, you don’t have to go far back.

In 2002 the San Francisco 49ers selected Brock Purdy with the 262nd pick. Late last season the Niners had to give the ball to the rookie quarterback after all other players at that position were left out. due to injury.

Purdy started five games in 2022 and has started twice in 2023. With a perfect 8-0 record he has already left the classification behind.

Another success story, and probably the most striking, is that of Jimmy Walker, who in 1967 was called up by the Saints in the 445th position, despite never having played American football. Walker managed to succeed, but in the NBA, after being the first pick in the Draft and in his career he averaged 16.7 points for the Pistons, Rockets and Kings.
