France Faces Heat Wave: Children’s Leisure Centers Take Extra Precautions

France is hit by a heat wave this week. In Orleans and its surroundings, 34° this Wednesday, September 6, 2023. It is 12° above seasonal norms. The leisure centers which welcome children during extracurricular time rely on vigilance and activities in the shade. This was the case this Wednesday in Saint-Jean-de-la-Ruelle in Loiret where around thirty children spent the afternoon on the grounds of the Paul Doumer school.

For Olivia Bellizio, deputy mayor in charge of citizenship and youth at the town hall of Saint-Jean-de-la-Ruelle, it is an additional responsibility of caring for children during these periods of high heat, even if often the supervisors are well trained. “The role of the facilitators is also to do prevention on the right things to do when it’s hot. We are really sure about educational continuity in the leisure centres. It is the result of what we can hear in class and it is also the support of parents“explains the deputy to the city of Saint-Jean-de-la-Ruelle.

Crushing heat for these children aged 7 to 10 who talk about their day. “The heat is a bit tiring. We played archery under the trees. After a rest and we did a game of “Good fishing” where we have to recover balls in a large tub of water with chopsticks“. While a group is playing in the shade, other children are inside, explains Valérie, the extracurricular referent on the Paul Doumer site, “dn the elementary school gymnasium we have installed a board game center and a relaxation area for reading, there are poufs to rest in peace“. Whether indoors or outdoors, no question of doing too intense activities and especially never exposed to the sun. No football on the asphalt and no water fight for this day of Wednesday.

Outdoor activities, but in the shade

The main thing is also to take the air explains Olivia Bellizio. “We have children all over town, some of whom live in apartments, so being outside and having an outdoor activity is very important. To keep up with these temperatures, children drink at least one glass of water every hour.

The city of Saint-Jean-de-la-Ruelle is committed to the planting of 600 trees during the mandate on roads and school areas.
