Former World Champion Calls for Clarity on Alexandra Popp’s Future with German National Team

It is still uncertain how long Alexandra Popp will play for the German national team. Now a world champion has commented on the personnel – and it is clear.

Former world champion Nia Künzer has called on DFB captain Alexandra Popp to make a clear statement about her future in the national soccer team. “I would like Alex to provide a little more clarity and say, for example: I will continue until the Euro. With a clear statement, she could also help ensure that there is more calm,” the 43-year-old told Deutsche on Wednesday Press agency.

“This must now be addressed promptly”

In view of the impasse surrounding the ill national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, Künzer emphasized: “It is crucial that the focus now is not just on the Olympic Games, but that strategic decisions are made on the way to the 2025 European Championship in Switzerland. This must now be done promptly be addressed.”

Künzer won the World Cup title with the DFB women in the USA in 2003. The Frankfurter scored the golden goal against Sweden in the final. She then worked for ARD as a football expert for many years and until after the World Cup in Australia this summer.

According to a “Bild” report, the former German U21 national coach Stefan Kuntz, most recently the Turkish national coach, is considered a candidate for the coaching position with the European runners-up. “Basically it’s about quality and experience. You have to think carefully about whether you take someone who hasn’t worked in women’s football at all,” said Künzer.

In addition to the coaching question, the DFB is also concerned about who will fill the new position of sports director for women. Ralf Kellermann, sports director at VfL Wolfsburg, is in conversation here. “I think that the task will appeal to him if he is asked,” said Künzer.
