Former Man United Goalkeeper David de Gea’s Future Hangs in the Balance: Possible Retirement Looms

Liputan6.com, Jakarta- Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea still hasn’t found a new club after leaving Old Trafford at the end of last June. Now there is even surprising news about the fate of the player from Spain.

David De Gea had to end his adventure at MU for 12 years in a bad way. The Red Devils did not reach an agreement on a new contract with De Gea so the former Atletico Madrid player left on a free transfer at the end of last season.

MU is strongly suspected of asking De Gea to accept a fairly large salary cut. De Gea objected so he did not extend his contract. MU manager Erik ten Hag also did nothing to pressure the club to retain De Gea.

Ten Hag allegedly prefers to replace De Gea with a goalkeeper who is good at controlling the ball. MU finally recruited Ten Hag’s former protégé, Andre Onana, who was recruited from Inter Milan to be De Gea’s replacement in goal.

Almost three months after leaving MU, De Gea still hasn’t found a new goalkeeper. The Guardian on Friday (22/9/2023) reported that De Gea might take extreme action in deciding his future. It is suspected that De Gea could retire from football if he does not find a suitable offer in the near future.

In fact, De Gea has received an offer from a rich Saudi Arabian club. However, the 32 year old player is not interested in playing in Saudi Arabia. Family factors were the reason De Gea rejected Saudi Arabia’s proposal. He wasn’t sure his family would be comfortable with a different life in the Middle East.
