Michael van Praag was nominated as chairman of the Dutch basketball association NBB on Thursday. The former football director is the only candidate who can be voted on at the general meeting of members on November 25.

“If I have the honor of being chosen as chairman of the association, I would like to talk to clubs and people within basketball to see what the needs are,” 76-year-old Van Praag looks ahead to his appointment.

Van Praag has an extensive past as a football director. He was chairman of Ajax from 1989 to 2003. During that period, the Amsterdam club achieved great success, with the Champions League final victory in 1995 as the highlight.

In 2008, Van Praag became chairman of the KNVB. He held that position for seven years. The Amsterdam director then made a vain bid for the presidency of the world football association FIFA. Van Praag is currently chairman of the Dutch Sports Council.

“I will use my contacts in The Hague and municipalities to promote the interests of the association there,” says Van Praag about his nomination as NBB chairman. “Think of suitable sports facilities. There is a lot to be gained there. Collaboration is always the starting point. At Ajax we always said: ‘Nothing beats the club.’ That also applies here.”

Van Praag must become Joop Brakenhoff’s successor at the NBB. He recently announced his retirement because he can no longer combine the position with his work.
