Women’s Bundesliga starts with foreign World Cup stars

FC Bayern against VfL Wolfsburg: The long-term duel for the championship is also expected in the women’s Bundesliga this season. The defending champions from Munich have strengthened themselves even further.
A good month after the embarrassing preliminary round exit of the German footballers at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the Bundesliga is starting the new season.
Defending champion FC Bayern Munich will face SC Freiburg in the opening game on Friday (6.15 p.m./MagentaSport, DAZN and ZDF). What you need to know about the new season:
Favorites
At the top, the long-term duel between the Bayern women and VfL Wolfsburg is expected again. The two teams have won every title between them since 2013. Before that, Turbine Potsdam won the championship four times, but was relegated to the second division this year. The candidates for third place in the Champions League are Eintracht Frankfurt, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and SC Freiburg.
New stars
The Munich women in particular have hit the transfer market: The world-class duo Pernille Harder (Denmark) and Magdalena Eriksson (Sweden) joined the team of English runner-up Georgia Stanway from Chelsea FC. The Colombian World Cup goalkeeper Catalina Perez (28) is between the posts for Werder Bremen. The German international Chantal Hagel has moved from Hoffenheim to Wolfsburg.
Rising star
The experts are particularly excited about newcomer RB Leipzig, whose women’s department was only founded in 2016. 1. FC Nürnberg is back in the upper house.
TV broadcasts
All 132 games in the women’s Bundesliga will be broadcast live – even from two different broadcasters. As before, all matches will be played on the Telekom broadcaster MagentaSport. The same rights package was acquired by the paid sports streaming service DAZN. Sport1 shows a total of 22 games, especially the game on the new Monday matchday. ARD and ZDF have together bought the rights for ten live broadcasts.
Viewership record
Since last season there have been 38,365 visitors in the country of the runner-up European champions. That’s how many came to the 1. FC Cologne – Frankfurt game.
