After last Sunday’s strike, the match between Ajax and Feyenoord in an empty Johan Cruijff Arena was completed on Wednesday. The interruption did not come at a good time for Feyenoord. Arne Slot’s team performed well and seemed on its way to a monster score. Now the players had to recharge.

“It was a great performance in terms of personality. On Sunday there were still a few thousand people waiting to celebrate the victory,” says Slot.

“Then you are in limbo for a day and you don’t know what will happen, after which you have to play again. The boys have to deal with that. When you come here and play with so much conviction and personality, it means a lot to me. And then I hope that the boys will still get the credit for winning 4-0 here for the first time in history.”

Watch Slot’s response:

Slot wanted to win again with Feyenoord in the remainder of the Classic

Feyenoord won, while it was icy quiet around the field. “It is not usual to play football for 35 minutes in an empty stadium. Fortunately, the latter (the empty stadium, ed.) is no longer the case, because it was a bit reminiscent of a few years ago,” says Feyenoord coach Arne Slot , who can still remember the empty stands during the corona crisis all too well.

Storm in Amsterdam

It has been stormy in Amsterdam in recent days. The match had to be stopped on Sunday with a 0-3 score due to fireworks on the field and the crisis also dragged on outside the lines. Technical director Sven Mislintat was fired on Sunday and earlier today supervisory board chairman Pier Eringa resigned. Reason enough for Feyenoord to also expect a storm on the field, an all-or-nothing offensive.

However, that did not happen. Within a few minutes Santiago Giménez scored his first of the afternoon and third of the match. Feyenoord played out the match in a controlled manner and gave Ajax the biggest home defeat in a classic in professional football.

Feyenoord went into the match with a comfortable 0-3 lead, but Slot and his men did not want to be lazy. The preparation was extensive. “We went into a hotel with the group just like last Sunday, to approach it as seriously as possible.”

‘Gloss diminished’

“You try to get into the opponent’s head. Neither of us have had this scenario yet, so we didn’t know what they were going to do. Personally, I would have gone full on attack,” Slot noted beforehand.

Another reason for wanting to win was the sense of honor. Slot and his team were heading for a historic victory, but the celebration did not happen last Sunday. “We really wanted to win here for the second time. It felt like the shine of our victory last Sunday had been taken away. The only way to get that back was to win here again.”
