Ferrari has returned to winning a Formula 1 Grand Prix

The Spanish Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz won the Singapore Grand Prix, held at night on Sunday on the Marina Bay street circuit. Ferrari had not won a World Championship race since 10 July 2022: then it was won by Charles Leclerc, who finished fourth in Singapore behind Lando Norris of McLaren and Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes.

For Sainz – who is 29 years old and has been racing in Formula 1 since 2015 – it is the second victory obtained in his career (both with Ferrari). In Singapore he started in pole position and held the position for 62 laps in a race notoriously among the toughest in the World Championship, due to the length, the humid climate and the characteristics of the street circuit. Furthermore, he defended his position in the final laps, when the gaps on his pursuers were reduced to a minimum.

In the first fourteen races of this edition of the Formula 1 World Championship there had only been victories for Red Bull, who won twelve with reigning champion Max Verstappen. In Singapore, however, Verstappen, like teammate Sergio Perez, encountered many unexpected technical difficulties. In qualifying he only achieved the eleventh time while in the race he finished in sixth place, dropping below second position for the first time.

The Ferrari World Championship had started with several difficulties. Red Bull immediately proved unapproachable, and has been so until now, but Aston Martin and Mercedes also seemed more competitive. Before Singapore, Ferrari had only achieved three podiums, and never above third position. A victory therefore did not seem possible this season, but instead it arrived with seven races remaining.
